Abdominoplasty or tummy tuck surgery involves removing excess skin, tightening overstretched abdominal muscles, and eliminating excess fat for an overall improvement in the waist and abdomen. Candidates for abdominoplasty are often women whose bodies have not recovered from the strain of pregnancy, and individuals who have lost a great deal of weight but are left with residual fat, stretched skin and lax muscles.
The incision for an abdominoplasty runs horizontally between the pelvic bones, just above the pubic area. After the incision, the abdominal muscles are tightened, which trims the waist and abdomen. The excess, stretched skin is removed, and liposuction may be used to eliminate excess fat and refine the contours of the midsection. Dr. Polacek is highly skilled and trained in advanced techniques in abdominoplasty surgery, helping her to achieve improved comfort and results for her patients. For a more comprehensive improvement, many Rhode Island breast augmentation patients choose a tummy tuck as well.
Recovery and Results
Recovery from a full abdominoplasty procedure can take from 3 to 6 weeks. Patients are advised to take approximately 3 weeks off from a sedentary job and 6 weeks off from strenuous activities and exercise. There are drainage tubes in place for up to 7 days, and you will need someone to help you during this time, as you will be unable to do much more than a little walking around. A tightly fitting surgical garment must be worn for several weeks to provide support and aid in healing. After approximately 7 to 10 days of soreness, swelling and bruising begin to subside, and you will begin to see the results of your procedure.
Dr. Polacek will discuss the abdominoplasty procedure and recovery in detail during your consultation. She will review the pros, cons, and risks of tummy tuck surgery, and help you to decide if you are a good candidate for this procedure.
