Whether it’s due to pregnancy, gravity, heredity, or weight fluctuations, most women see changes in the shape of their breasts over time. Breasts that sag or have lost shape and volume can often affect a woman’s self-confidence. At the Polacek Center for Plastic Surgery near Providence, Rhode Island, breast lift surgery (also known as mastopexy) raises the breasts and improves breast contour by removing excess skin and tightening surrounding tissue. Dr. Lori Polacek performs breast lift surgery to help women rejuvenate their figure and restore their confidence.

Choosing Breast Lift
There are several distinct and personal reasons why you may be considering a breast lift procedure. Your breasts may have changed over time, losing youthful shape and firmness. A breast lift may be an excellent choice for you if:
- Your breasts droop or sag
- Your nipples and areolas point downward or descend well past the breast crease
- Your areolas have become enlarged over time
While a breast lift can improve the appearance of the breasts, it cannot increase breast volume. Many women in Rhode Island choose breast implants along with their breast lift to ensure that their breasts are both full and youthful.
If changes in breast appearance are primarily due to pregnancy, there may be other physical changes that have occurred. To improve their body contour after pregnancy, many women choose to combine several procedures (breast lift, liposuction or others) for a “Mommy Makeover.” Dr. Polacek will discuss your options for combined procedures during your initial consultation.
The Breast Lift Procedure & Recovery
As a compassionate cosmetic plastic surgeon, Dr. Polacek will be with you through every step of the process; she will carefully explain what you can expect during and after the procedure. Incision patterns vary depending on the degree of excess skin and the amount of lifting required. Many women can achieve the desired result with a vertical or “lollipop incision,” which encircles the areola and descends in a straight line to the breast crease. Some women, however, will require an inverted “T” or anchor shaped incision, which adds a short, horizontal incision along the breast fold. With these incisions, Dr. Polacek is able to remove excess skin, lift and shape underlying tissue, reposition the nipple and areola, and reduce enlarged areolas.
While most women are well on their way to a full recovery after about 2 to 4 weeks, overall improvements may take 1 to 3 months to emerge, with incision lines continuing to fade for up to a year. When recovery is complete, women who choose a breast lift can enjoy the firm, perky breasts of their youth.
